Payslip Format
A valid payslip typically includes the following information:

Components of a Payslip
Understanding the major earnings and deduction components helps employees and employers manage payroll effectively.
Basic Salary
The primary component of compensation and the base upon which other allowances are calculated. Typically 40–60% of CTC.
House Rent Allowance (HRA)
Paid to help employees cover rental expenses. Range is 40–50% of basic salary depending on the city tier. Partially tax-exempt.
Dearness Allowance (DA)
A cost-of-living adjustment given primarily to government employees to offset inflation. Fully taxable.
Special / Performance Allowance
Incentive-based pay to reward output. Fully taxable and often variable depending on goals achieved.
Other Allowances
Travel, medical, internet, or any employer-defined additional compensation components.
Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF)
Mandatory deduction of 12% of basic salary directed to a retirement fund. Employer also contributes an equal amount. Tax-exempt.
Professional Tax
A state-levied tax on salaried individuals. Varies by state and income slab. Maximum ₹2,500 per year.
Tax Deducted at Source (TDS)
Income tax deducted by the employer on behalf of the Income Tax Department, based on the employee’s estimated annual income.
ESI (Employee State Insurance)
Applicable if gross salary ≤ ₹21,000/month. Employee contributes 0.75% and employer 3.25% towards social security benefits.
Loan / Advance Deduction
Any outstanding company loans or salary advances are recovered as a monthly deduction from the payslip.
